The original image of this ring was a typical heraldic Unicorn. It’s still that style but has a little more to it now. This is by far the most popolar ring I’ve done. Its often referred to in my correspondences with various customers. Either for the way the image ”breaks” the border, the removal of the background or the lettering around the edge. This one piece and the photos from it have been very helpful in my business.
I was honoured this last week to be able to contribute to the wonderfully talented Ellinor Stenroos contemporary silver sculpture. As small as my component was it was still an honour to be asked.
Ellinor is truly a pleasure to work with and it’s always in a collaborative spirit. She is one of the very few that openly shares credit in spite of the fact that I don’t ask her to.
Thank you Ellinor. @evstenroos
A ring I engraved a couple years ago came in for a little additional work. We cleaned it up and added a few details to the shoulder.
An engraving artist’s life isn’t all about an endless series of scroll work.
I’ve had this Dogfish piece kicking around in my head for 35 years. I don’t know why it took so long to get out.
I truly threw away the clock on this, and pushed till “it was done”
This is that moment I spoke of earlier… I need to give it a few days to see what starts to bug me and what I have to fix. I’ve already spotted a few problems.
Once the engraving is complete, it’ll need a surface texturing process. I’ll tumble it in walnut shells to give an even , soft velvety look.
This'll be the closest to a triple X photo I post...lol... sorry, Dad joke... How fortunate was I to have these land on my desk!
I'm not sure how to explain it but in the last couple of years people have been purchasing signet rings in multiples. Through my entire career it was always single ring purchases and very rarely two would come in but in the last couple of years I've had at least a half dozen times where I've done 3-5 rings at a time. It kind of defies what the economy is telling us... but there could be other factors at play here. Perhaps something to do with the ageing Grand Parents wanting to purchase for the entire family... I don't know ..I'm just saying its been happening quite a bit ... I love it, make no mistake. But its interesting.
Been a while since I posted one of these multiple shots..Thank you very much for all of your wonderful comments and nice words with regard to my work. With so many methods of contact...messages on the post , DM's, emails and other apps that I post on , I
Ok well... I've made improvements with my photography but I'm still a ways away from having a complete grasp on it. This was tough to photograph.
I haven't done a pendant for a while and I was asked to do this one. It has the names of the owners two children.
The path from A to B is not always clear.
I started this signet ring not certain as to how I was going to translate the image here. It's a graphic style, loosely based on reality but obviously highly stylized. The thing about this image is that it was supplied by the customer and so I should stay close to the design.
Now, I appreciate super fine engraving and understand its photgraphic appeal. Thousands of tiny cuts to create the illusion of depth and shading but not every image works or translates like that. I could have done that with this image but it would have required the owner to hold the ring in the right light and at the right angle to see the image. Some images are a no brainer as to that being the correct way to engrave , such as a lot of heraldic work. This , being the top of a signet ring which takes a bit of a beating, needed more. I saw it and increasingly with more pieces as of late, as a coin. I had already beaten the top down and hardened the surface so a coin look was appropriate.
