Warren Smith, master-engraver, has been a student of Haida art and culture from a very early age. Growing up, he was neighbor to Lia Grundle, original agent of both Bill Reid and Robert Davidson, two of the most distinguished Haida Artists. This gave Smith significant access to Haida art exhibits as well as Reid’s celebrated Pender Street studio to see works in progress that would later become iconic Haida art pieces.
Awestruck and impassioned, Smith sensed the unwritten set of rules in Haida art, and recalls an attraction and deep fascination with the manner in which form lines bent in a "beautifully soft yet angular fashion," an art form at once structured but also other-worldly; hallowed, meaningful but mysterious.
Now a respected artist in his own right, Smith draws, carves, paints and engraves Northwest Coast Native /Haida style artwork with the same sense of wonder and passion for the enigmatic form, evoking those first feelings of childlike wonder and awe.
